Lock down

I have officially enjoyed my last bit of chocolate for four weeks (until my birthday on the 16th). It was the last four squares of a lovely 30p Somerfield dark chocolate bar. I still think it's a bit nuts how cheap that stuff is for how good it tastes.

This is going to be a bit mentally challenging, as chocolate is one of those things that makes my brain go, "I WANT, I NEED," especially during PMS and crazy period times. There have been times when I didn't have any and would literally pace around the kitchen looking for something to fill that gap. Then I'd eat a load of other stuff and would still find myself unsatisfied and craving chocolate even more. If I can train myself that it's just a treat and not a necessity, I think I'll be in a good place. I know it will probably take longer than four weeks to accomplish that, but I think it's a good start.

Michael (my husband) is taking the rest of what we had in the house to work with him, and we won't bring any into the house in that four week period. (We should be mostly moved in tomorrow, fingers crossed!) We'll also be stocking a lot of fruit.

Feeling a bit of withdrawal already, but it's for the best.

WHAT HAVE I DONE?

  1. Hey Steph, this is incredibly brave and vulnerable stuff you're posting. I'm currently the healthiest I've ever been and it was damn hard to get here...so I know the road isn't easy. Have you had your thyroid checked? My mom was almost 300lbs and couldn't loose a thing until finally she met a doctor who would test her thyroid...as soon as she was on meds for that the weight flew off and in a year she got done to 150lbs. She still works at it hard to maintain but it was so much better after she had the support of the medical community (which can be hard to find)...good luck m'dear! ~Danielle

  2. Thanks! Since I know I can lose weight when I try (I have done twice in the past), I'm pretty sure it's probably not a thyroid issue. If I do have trouble this time, I will keep that in mind though!

  3. Fruit is great - grapes and bananas are my go-to for "healthy snacks," although lately I've also been eating celery sticks with peanut butter.

I don't know what your feelings are on dairy (I think you mentioned cutting back to skim?), but I've found that a good fix for my chocolate cravings is a glass of chocolate milk. It might not have the texture of a chocolate bar, but it has the flavour, plus milk is good for me. Bonus: the chocolate syrup tastes like crap on its own, so I'm never tempted to just chug it :) Just a thought if you're having trouble getting over the chocolate hump ...
